Sue in the Solomons

Created by Murray 12 years ago
After a brief return to Colorado, with Murray in tow, for the 1987/88 ski season, the tropics beconned once again. Accepting a 2-year contract to manage a small diving resort in the western province of the Solomon Islands, Sue and Murray embarked on a life altering expedition. Uepi Island, on the outer edge of the Marovo Lagoon, was, and still is, the epitome of an island paradise. Defining itself autonomously, deprived of the trappings of consumerism, the local culture exemplifies the rawness of the human spirit. Technology was virtually non-existent; the principal communication with the outside world was by VHF radio, with regular "sched's" commanding Sue's day. With the support of the local villages, their unselfish offerings of companionship, their garden harvests, their catches of the day, Uepi Island was abound in experiences, excitement and enchantment. Sue absorbed herself in the rich culture of her new family (22 staff members from the local villages), learned to speak pidgin english, visited their home villages, delighted in their jovial antics. She amused herself in the tropical jungles whenever time permitted, wandering the shores seeking out the most diminutive critter to discover its purpose and pursuits. Under water lay a mesmerizing spectacle. Although Sue often thought she had slipped out of her comfort zone (water should be crystallized and skied upon!), any dive buddy would see her as a perfectly calm and controlled diver, enjoying every moment, every sight and sound the marine world would surrender.
